Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / 300MB memory usage

For once a Microsoft product is doing exactly what it supposed to do. Well behaved operating systems are supposed to use all available memory for the applications it is running then and only then use swap. Exactly how large are the application and its “libraries” and how would you change the way the memory model worked?

Comment Topic: Announcements / [PreRelease] JBidwatcher 1.0.3pre2

Just loaded JBidWatcher 1.0.3pre2 hoping it would fix my Multisnipe problem but now the program doesn’t even attempt to bid at all. Using OpenSuse 10.3 (kernel 2.6.22.12-0.1-default) under KDE 3.5.7 “release 72.2”. These are the errors that show in the Errors.log files:

NOTE: None of these errors reflect the items which I was multisniping. The all seem tied up with an earlier item that ended on November 7, 2007. This newest version is going backwards. The only difference I see in the logs is that they contain the HTML of some page, and that page is rendered with strange characters throughout.

From a few minutes ago:

And once again the sniping failed for exactly the same reason. If this is what JBidWatcher is going to do, it is next to useless. In fact worse than that because it takes up memory resources in the computer.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Multisnipe fails to bid

Why is this happening? Is it not jBidWatcher’s purpose to WATCH and update these things?

Sat Nov 10 06:21:49 EST 2007: Sat Nov 10 06:21:49 EST 2007: 110190266525 (PNY Nvidia G-Force 6200 Graphics Card 256MB 8X AGP) – An earlier snipe in this multisnipe group has not been updated. (1)

It seems more often than not that sniping does not work as intended. I have won far more bids just bidding the old way of placing a maximum bid in days or weeks before an auction ends. Sniping seems to work great if I am the only person bidding on an item.

On this particular item I had about 13 or 14 items which were set up on multisnipe most of which were set up all on one day. I lost the bid on all but one of the similar items (different but I didn’t care which one I won as long as I won one of them). I had one remaining item which would not end until several days in the future.

As new items were put on eBay I added them to the one remaining multisnipe but each of them had earlier ending dates than the one remaining item. This particular item (on which jBidWatcher refused to bid) was one of the new items added to that older remaining multisnipe group which only had one more bid to go.

I have a few more items remaining in this multisnipe group, all of which are due to end before that one original remaining item of which the auction does not end for a few more days. At present the prices are excellent as was this one above. I hope jBidWatcher will do what it is supposed to do.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Not Logging In..

I saw the advertising again yesterday Nov. 3, 2007. It was for yet another eBay product/feature (nuisance). It only seems to pop up and cause problems when I am sniping something I really, really, want and would have been the only bidder. Then the sniping doesn’t connect. A minute later I find that ad when I sign in manually. Naturally nobody knows when the sniping failed when I happen to be away from the computer for about 8 hours One item did sell, off the Internet and the seller pulled the item (wouldn’t you know that I was the high bidder with no reserve on a video card that retails for $100+ and my bid was around $10).

Winning bids on eBay and trying to get an item at bargain basement prices is like trying to buy toy robots at flea markets for 50 cents. Doable but only once every couple of years. And the stupid thing is that many of those items go for50% to 100% more than the full retail price buying it directly from a regular Internet site.

Another thing that may be affecting login might be the advertising page. About once a week when I log in to myEbay I find some sort of advertisement on the eBay website and I have to press the “Continue on to MyEbay” button. Might this be affecting autologin in JBidWatcher?

Are you sure that you do not have a Firewall blocking access? If you are using Windows and it is using the default Windows Firewall you will not know what it is doing and it does not usually give you control of Internet access or program access. I always recommend that people switch to ZoneAlarm and then they can see what the Firewall is doing on both Internet and program access. It is free (or you can PURCHASE the superdupper version. If you are using ZoneAlarm or another Firewall, you must shut off the Windows default one.

Also try shutting off your Firewall and Anti-virus program temporarily and see if that helps.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Icon

Your Documents and Settings/Glen/.Jbidwatcher is where your DATA is stored not the program. To run the program look under the Directory C:\Program Files\ for the jBidWatcher program. Now you might have to set your File Manager settings a little differently to be able to see the EXE program because the default is to not show registered files. If you have never used the Tools, View Files options before write back and I try to walk you through it.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Still confused about sniping and multisniping

I’ve read the FAQ on snipping and multisniping and still seem to get something wrong. If I want to add another item to an already established multisnipe I use the following procedure (or at least I think I do):
Locate the item on eBay and copy the ID number.
Click on one of the items in the group (let’s call it the green group).
Click on auction and then add then paste the item number into the textbox.
Set up the price and check the shipping subtraction option.

But sometimes I run into trouble because there will be a shipping noted on the eBay item page but for some reason it does not grab the shipping and account for it. Therefore if I only want to pay a total of $30 including the shipping and the shipping is $10, I put in a snipe price of $30 and usually the shipping is subtracted from the snipe price which shows $20. However when there is no shipping price in the shipping column I adjust the Max bid to $20. This might be where I change from snipe to bid.

What should I be doing in this case?

And is there an option I might have chosen on eBay that tells me the shipping to my area Northeastern Oh but jBidWatcher only picks up the static shipping for everybody?

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Add Columns disappear

OK, I’ve figured out how to add custom columns and move them around to where I want them. However if I close JBidWatcher or have to reboot the computer (jBidWatcher 1.0.2 and OpenSuse 10.3) the columns disappear again. What is the trick to making them sticky?

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Current vs Complete

First let me congratulate Morgan for all the effort put into jBidWatcher. It wins accolades.

As a new user I may be missing something very basic. This is my dilemma. When I mark an item to watch on eBay and later use jBidWatcher to BUY it, that item may end up staying in the Current section. And there doesn’t seem to be a way of moving it to Complete even after it has been shipped and received. I’ve noticed this behavior particularly when the Seller has multiple quantity of the same item. The item still stays in Current and gives the number of days left to sell.

I also seem to have a problem with an item I wish to purchase that is an “immediate payment required” item. It seems that buying it with jBidWatcher does not complete, and an error is generated. Is this normal? I have had to sign onto eBay with my browser and complete the transaction.

And although I do a very limited amount of buying on eBay it seems the few Sniping attempts did not success and the logs show:

Cancelling snipe. 1193085639900 Preparing snipe. 1193164652042 Cancelling snipe, auction is reported as ended. 1193164804177 Cancelling snipe. 1193164804177

or on another one:

Cancelling snipe. 1193085781076

These are for the same item but different ending times and different prices. Only the first one Sniped just before ending and the others are pending. I might point out that all the sellers of this item (a book) listed the item as Buy Now or Best Offer. Could anyone explain this to me. And is there a way of viewing these logs that makes more sense?

I might add that I am using OpenSuse 10.3 with Firefox 2.0.0.8 if that helps. JBW is 1.0.2.
