Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Development / Will Jbid still work?

I think Ruby would be a great choice for some future version of JBW. I started using Ruby a couple years ago and it’s currently the only computer language I use on a regular basis. As for the UI, maybe JBW could become a local server accessible only through a web browser interface.

Do you have a MySQL server installed and working properly all by itself? You will need that before trying the second database option you mentioned.

Did you try letting jbw create a brand new embedded Derby DB to see what happens? To do that quit jbw, rename the $HOME/.jbidwatcher directory to something else, launch jbw. Make sure the “Use default embedded Derby DB” jbw option is selected, of course.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / 2.1.2 - 100% cpu load

I am not seeing this problem on ubuntu 9.10 + latest Oracle java. At jbw startup there is high cpu use while importing the hundreds of finished auctions I keep in the ‘complete’ and ‘selling’ tabs, but after that it settles to low single digit cpu use. I only have a couple dozen auctions in the ‘current’ tab right now. The older auctions in the ‘complete’ and ‘selling’ tabs have “deleted item” red triangles but that doesn’t seem to be causing any trouble for me.

My main suggestion would be to try using the latest official Oracle java JRE or JDK. Or try finding a more recent version of OpenJDK than the one available through the ubuntu repositories.

Are you using jbw 2.1.2 with a database created by a previous jbw version? If that’s the case, perhaps it would be worthwhile to let jbw 2.1.2 create a new database and see what happens.

Jbw 2.1.2 is working fine for me on ubuntu 9.10 with java 1.6.0_21. I use the official java JRE from Oracle rather than the alternative open source versions that are out there. What java version are you using?

Comment Topic: Announcements / [Release] JBidwatcher 2.1.2 released

@johncl
For what it’s worth, I am able to drop the AMIGA-SECRET URL into jbw from firefox 3.6.9 on linux without problem. You might want to try a browser other than chrome and see what happens.

Dragging the rover.ebay.com URL doesn’t work for me on linux. Jbw says “Cannot add auction 7” for that URL.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Drag&Drop to 2.1.1 not working

I posted a bug report here:

https://jbidwatcher.lighthouseapp.com/projects/8037-jbidwatcher/tickets/1281-in-jbw-211-linux-firefox-drag-drop-not-working

I have drag & drop working again on Linux with a modified JBW 2.1.1. The file attached to the bug report has the changes I made. It would be interesting to know if those changes help on Windows and Mac too.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / 2.1.1 Window Fails to Draw

I recommend you start from scratch. Get a fresh copy of the source code from the git repository and if you do it right (and nothing interrupts the process) a src subdirectory will be present. This is the command I use to get the source code:

git clone git://github.com/cyberfox/jbidwatcher.git

Note the current AuctionEntry.java file from git already has the change I posted above, so all you will have to do is use the ant command to build the jar file.

The command you are looking for is ant. On Linux the command throws an error message at the very end of the process while trying to build the Windows executable, but that’s OK because the jar has already been built by then.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / 2.1.1 Database Corruption

I posted the code change on this thread:

http://forum.jbidwatcher.com/forums/1/topics/2673?page=1#posts-7617

I don’t know if it will work for other people with redrawing problems, but it did the trick for me on Linux. I keep several years worth of expired auctions on my JBW database and I think that might be what triggered the redrawing problem and also the auctions showing on the wrong tabs.

Look for “public boolean isJustAdded()” in file AuctionEntry.java. You need to get the source code from the git repository to get this change done.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / 2.1.1 Database Corruption

I was able to send all the misplaced old auctions to the “complete” tab without incident so I guess the database wasn’t as messed up as I thought. I am also no longer having redrawing problems after a small modification to JBW.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Drag&Drop to 2.1.1 not working

Did some investigating and on my Linux machine the problem is in TargetDrop::receiveDropString, where the call to tinyDocument.getAllURLsOnPage(true) is returning null. Here is a sample dropped string that causes this problem:

<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/MID-E-book-128MB-DDR2-800Mhz-2GB-7-White-M-001-NEW-/230520339798?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&amp;hash=item35ac153d56" class="vip">MID &amp; E-book 128MB DDR2 800Mhz 2GB 7" White M-001 NEW</a>

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / 2.1.1 Window Fails to Draw

I can make all my JBW 2.1.1 redrawing problems in Linux to go way by changing AuctionEntry::isJustAdded to this:

public boolean isJustAdded() { Date d = getDate("created_at"); return (d != null) &amp;&amp; (d.getTime() &gt; (System.currentTimeMillis() - (Constants.ONE_MINUTE * 5))); }

There were a bunch of exceptions coming from there before because getDate() returns null often and the code wasn’t checking for that.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / 2.1.1 Database Corruption

I began using JBW 2.1.1 last night and things looked normal (except for redraw and drag & drop issues mentioned in other threads). I fire up 2.1.1 this morning and now the database appears to be all messed up. A whole bunch of completed auctions that were formerly in the “complete” tab are now showing in the “current” tab. Also this morning the redrawing problem is far worse than last night. Now none of the tabs redraw properly, and also the menu bar doesn’t redraw properly anymore.

I also see redraw problems on the “complete” and “selling” tabs under Ubuntu 9.10. I have a large number auctions on both of those tabs and I suspect the problem is related to that. On the “current” tab I only have half a dozen auctions and it redraws fine.

Drag & drop broken for me too on Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic) with JBW 2.1.1 freshly built from git.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Development / Hilight color is bad

I see why you want to preserve the text colors due to the special meaning they have in the auction list. So maybe the solution is to use a different way to highlight the row, such as drawing a thick border around it instead of changing its background color, perhaps.

I also learned the highlight color can be totally customized via the Appearance Preferences app. Never had to do that before in a couple of years of using linux though.

I still think there is something wrong with the way jbw highlights the selected row in the auction list. Other apps change not only the background color but also the color of the text itself in a selection. For example, in firefox the text color currently changes from black to white when it is selected and that makes it stand out well even against a dark brown background color. In fact, even in parts of jbw itself, such as the Activity and Error log windows, the color of the text goes from black to white when text is selected. Maybe the auction list should do something similar.

It looks like the highlight color on Ubuntu linux depends on the appearance theme selected. So I worked around the problem by choosing a different theme with a more compatible highlight color.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Development / Hilight color is bad

This is about 2.1pre6 on linux. When I click on a row in the auction list, the background turns into a dark brown. That color makes it almost impossible to read the text in the row, especially when the text is dark brownish red due to there being bids on the auction. I don’t see anything in the GUI that lets me change that color. So where can I go to in the source code to get rid of this awful color?

How about making a symbolic link so ~/.jbidwatcher actually points to ~/Library/Preferences/JBidwatcher?

Maybe go to the Paths tab in the Configuration Manager window and set the path where the old database is?
