So yesterday I got an error message that the snipe didn’t trigger, but I won the auction anyway??!

Great! A simple reload and mine’s back too. I don’t know how to cope, near to cracking up frankly – I’d never go broke without JBidWatcher.
EBay does seem to be on the war path.

like solaris_07 i had the same problem “Cannot add auction (number), either invalid or communication error talking to server.”
when I checked my jar file it seemed that I didn’t received the fix (posted in this thread) that I should get when I update. although the configuration was correct “allow live …” and i restarted the program several times. After changing my properties file manually (open jar, changing the properties, seal jar with correct manifest) it did work on my ubuntu. My mac had the same problem, reinstalling 1.0.2 (not pre6) and then restarting (and thereby updating) jbidwatcher worked with that one.

I hope I was some help and that I was a bit clear ;-)

1.0.2 seems to be working again for me. Don’t know if it downloaded the two updates that were mentioned though. Still, I don’t trust ebay right now and will sit with the computer when the snips should fire and make sure it really is successful.

As for those with a time sync problem, all I can suggest is to set up ntp on your systems and regularly sychronise your system clock to a time server. I have mine do that once every four hours, which is quite sufficient to keep the time really correct.

I was having problems (Mac OSX.10.4, all my machines) with auctions not updating and new watched items not appearing. The “Check for Updates” trick did nothing for me either. What finally did the trick was trashing the file ~/.jbidwatcher/JBidWatch.cfg. After a restart, all is back to normal.

Thanks Morgan,

Running a Windows XP box with SP1 only. Able to add auctions, bid, snipe and time syncing is not a problem. Set sniping for 4 seconds prior to end of auction and successful bid fired off with 4 seconds left.

I spent the last 3 mins of auction time syncing and it fired when expected – the first time.
Either config fixed it (?) or time sync is not working – is a timesync done on login before pre-snipe?

“I am still having time sync issues. Never had it with 1.0, or 1.01.”

Likewise. Something has changed.

I am still having time sync issues. Never had it with 1.0, or 1.01.
Xp S2 FF 2.006
Have missed about 4 auctions now – snipe is now set to 30 seconds and I’m not sure that will fix prob :-(
BTW – minor ug – the total$ in the bottom right of the screen (total of all auctions0 doesn’t update if you increase the max snipe on an existing auction.

every time i want to “add auction” an error occurred in a pop up:
“Cannot add auction (number), either invalid or communication error talking to server.”
i had already reinstalled it. so i agree with past anouncements, unfortunately jbidwatcher do not work for me.
(system mac os 10.4.10, macbook, login works, up to date java version 1.5.0.07).
I’m sorry to say that i can not programming, otherwise i would help.

I upgraded to 1.0.2. It worked fine for a day-and-a-half and then became broken. I agree with chuck585a about eBay trying to deliberately break jbidwatcher as a possibility. The changes on their end definitely seem odd. Otherwise, everything is once again a-OK over here. Thanks.

As Morgan stated earlier: “If you’re having trouble with 1.0.2, go to the ‘File’ menu, and choose ‘Check for Updates’.” Restarting JBW will also cause it to automatically retrieve the update (assuming you have ticked the “Allow live configuration updates” option).

Well, a CVS checkout at 1330h PDT, is still giving me the
“can not add auction error”. And of course there are no updates.
This is on A Debian Sid machine, Sun java.

Alas, the “silent” updating described above appears not to work as outlined (for me, at least) on OS X 10.4.10 … is there some hidden trick to it? ‘File’->‘Check for Updates’, as there appears to be no noticeable end result here.

Greetings,

I should note that also just restarting will usually resolve it, as JBidwatcher is set to look for updates on restart and about once a day (so long-running JBidwatcher’s will pick it up over the next day even w/o manually checking for updates). Also any new users will pick up the changes automatically during their first run.

A capability I put in specifically for circumstances like this… :)

Best of luck with your auctions!

Greetings,

If you’re having trouble with 1.0.2, go to the ‘File’ menu, and choose ‘Check for Updates’. It’ll tell you there are no new updates, but it will have silently loaded the two new strings for the matching code.

Your auctions should immediately start updating again.

Thanks to Laurence Passmore again, for the fix. I took his patch, and just put it (pretty much) straight into the update file, and it worked.

So, am I the only one who is beginning to think that these ebay updates are being done just to break sniping programs? Ebay knows the sniping programs cut into their profits, so it would be really easy for them to intentionally break JBidwatcher by just inserting minor editorial changes in the page format. It could be done on a cron script… play the floating “ebay” word game! It’s here! it’s there! it’s everywhere! … Then it isn’t.

Seriously, the format of an ebay page matters very little to ebay. Just so long as it looks good. If they chose to, they could make Morgan’s, and our lives really frustrating.

Perhaps it is time to develop a more AI approach to the page scraping?

Hi, update works great!

Just unpack with Winrar (its zipped) into an folder. Open jbidwatcher.properties with e.g. Textpad on win. Open the above linked textfile with textpad in another tab, too. copy the two lines which changed over old ones and zip it and rename to .jar and everything works!

great response time!!!

Morgan, you are the greatest!!!

regards,
Stefan

The Windows version with file name JBidWatcher-1.0.1.1.jar works fine for me. For some reason this version seems very resilient. As far as I know, it’s been working fine throughout all of eBay’s recent changes.

tested JBidWatcher-1.0.1.jar (that is not 1.0.1.1, I guess??), didn’t work, red eyes (not just from weeping again … )
I read this morning, ebay announced an update from 7:00-11:00 today in Germany, this is probably to be made responsible

please, give an adress for a binary download, pleeeehhheeeease :)

Yes they’ve changed their title format again. JBW will need its properties file updated. If you have CVS you can recompile a working version by including this fix . It’s a simple configuration change so I would expect Morgan to release an automatic update later today.
