Topic: (Almost) all auctions showing FP

Hello all. I have been trying off and on today, but JBW is severely broken at the moment. I think it triggered a CAPTCHA in the end. For some reason it couldn’t log in (as mentioned earlier), No change in passwords etc. So basically, I lost an auction and I can no longer do any testing.

I don’t know how long these things stay in place, but i’ll get back to it later. I’m guessing it won’t be before tomorrow though.

The last time I tried it – a couple minutes ago, I had to resort to Task Manager to kill the process since it hung. So really I’m dead in the water for a bit.

Frank P. – Sorry to hear you too are suffering from the FPs. (Should ‘the FPs’ become a notifiable disease ?)
You and I may get a different rendering of the forum pages but here is what I see at this end…

Even with recent activity the icon next to this topic’s title on the first ‘Help’ page is often grey when it should be green.
When I hover the mouse over the icon a tooltip style bubble appears.
When the icon is grey the tooltip says ‘No recent activity. This topic is locked’
When the icon is green the tooltip says ‘Recent activity. This topic is locked.’

That is where I got the idea from – the words ‘This topic is locked’.
[I’ll admit the icon itself is not a padlock – I only looked for that when I read your reply.]
The icon can be grey even when the text on the right hand side under ‘Last post’ says ‘1 minute ago’.

I would normally ignore such things but it suggests that the system does not report activity and status reliably.
If the system is supposed to generate activity statistics or notifications then perhaps those are not reliable either.
It is a short leap from that unreliability to ….
If no-one is notified that there is a problem with JBW then no-one is working on a fix.
(Maybe not true but it was a possible outcome that I really didn’t like the sound of.)

Topic: (Almost) all auctions showing FP

Just noticed on the first help page (http://forum.jbidwatcher.com/forums/1) that this topic shows as inactive and locked.
We have all been posting to it just fine – so how can it be ‘inactive and locked’ ??

Is it possible that Morgan is unaware of the scale of this problem because he thinks this topic is inactive ?

I don’t know how to scream properly in text so ‘Arrggh!’ will have to do.

essarr – Considering how well ebay treats users I am not sure they are smart enough to deliberately throw a spanner in the works.

I too am stuck with all FPs at the moment. I have had a poke at it every few hours without success.
So far no resetting/restarting/reloading/dumping cache/refresh ebay session/etc has done the trick.
JBW is the only application I am running which would/should log in to ebay.

maybe coincidence, but all of the auctions on UK ebay that should be open bidding that have turned into (FP) are all the soonest closing auctions e.g. under 3 days only one >5 days is keeping a NON-(fp) status.

dumping cache and refreshing no longer working. also tried cleaning out all prefs and reconfiguring with a new search – same result. would be a great supporter of the (FP) override as a failsafe for ebay changing its html behind the scenes. And who’s to know if the changes are not perhaps designed to throw a spanner in the works of sniping programs?

refreshing ebay session doesn’t cure it, strange enough, “update all auctions” does …
… so it is getting worse ….

…same here, some auctions turn to FP when refreshed, some simply stay FP though they are not. Going forth and back from 2.5. doesn’t change anything here. And I guess we don’t have to discuss our computer systems, it is an ebay/JBidWatcher-communication-related problem. There are other glichtes as well: fe 170817184878 is a fixed price or make offer auction with paypal on ebay UK, that shows in JBW as 1 Pound and 5 offers made, which is confusing nonsense …

Same here, also Win XP, Java 7 Update 7, ebay.de. (FP) everywhere, rendering JBidwatcher useless for the moment. :-(

As others have pointed out already (much like my very first guess), none of the fixes / workarounds have really worked, other than by coincidence. eBay seems to have changed the page layout and thereby screwing up JBidwatchers HTML parsing.

Morgan, any chance you can give us some interim solution like the previously discussed “ignore FP” option soon?

OK. All was well here until around 23:30, where everything went back to (FP).

I tried your method, but it didn’t fix it. I then closed JBW and restarted, and then followed your steps – with success.

I’m going to continue to let it run. I’m interested if this is a once a day problem, or is happening on some discernible schedule. It ran for six hours for me without problem. Then I hit one.

I’m probably holding out some false hopes here – but I’ll keep tracking.

ps: I thought I’d check the log. I’ve never looked at them before, and the first lesson I learned was they get recreated on each start-up. Doh!

pps: Found the old log files. As you all probably know, there’s no indication in it of any problems.

Vaughn – I’m.glad you won that auction. No guilt required. You have proved that it is still possible,
Seems I left JBW by itself for too long. All my auctions went back to FP.
No browsers logged in during this time. Firefox was not running on any of my devices.
The good news is that ‘Refresh ebay session’’ followed by ‘Update auctions’ got rid of the FPs again, at least for now.

The ebay app is installed on my phone but it is not listed as a running app.
I suppose it might run as a service or periodically as a scheduled task.
Have uninstalled it in order to be certain.

P.S. Given that we are a community of snipers I am reluctant to say anything bad about lurkers.

Huh. Being half way in the stone age I only have a single device, my PC.

Still, sounds like you have had a little success.

As I’ve said before, I know there has been many false dawns and “fixes” that turned out to be temporary only. So I appreciate your testing this as well.

We MAY be on to something. But only time will tell. Do let us know how you get on, even with bad news. Sounds like there are a few JBW users suffering this problem, so I’m sure they’re eager for a workaround. Even lurkers out there – of which I was one – come here to see if they can find a solution to this annoying development. I hope this helps them too!

Hello, I had the same problem. I was not able to add auctions anymore, existing auctions showed the (FP). The login sign stated, that the login did not clearly fail, but no valid cookie was retrieved. Restarting jBidWatcher somtimes worked, but 5 minutes later, the login message stated again, that the login failed.

The solution to log off from eBay on the current computer did not work for me directly, but what about other devices that I use, e.g my iPhone and my iPad. So I deleted the eBay application from both devices, and bingo…. I can snipe again. The eBay app periodically logs into eBay and checks for messages. It seems, that this periodic login will steal the session from jBidWatcher

Well, I won the auction. Everything kicked off as it should. I’m going to leave JBW running to see if the other auctions I have in there stay as they are, and don’t change to (FP). I don’t have anything ready to kick off for another 24 hours though.

I know some of you have had false dawns thinking you’ve found a fix for this – so the chances are I’ve stumbled upon one too. Still, we’ll see if this is another false hope over time….. :)

Topic: (Almost) all auctions showing FP

My recipe was simple enough, but things can get mangled in English. -lol-

Basically, I logged out of Ebay via the LOG OUT link on Ebay page in my browser. Now if I visit Ebay on the browser it reads “Welcome, (Sign in to bid or buy)”.

So I’m logged out as far as Ebay and the Browser is concerned.

Then I went to JBW and simply used UPDATE AUCTION on all the auctions I’m tracking. (FP) cleared for all of them, and it’s been OK for around 90 minutes thus far.

A good test would be closing and reopening JBW a few times. But I don’t want to do anything to break this because I have an auction coming in a few hours, and I hope to win it. I lost out on something yesterday because of this (FP) problem, so I’ll see if this makes things right.

One strange thing I saw as well – one of my (FP) auctions moved itself to the COMPLETE tab, even though it had four days left to go! I couldn’t re-add it right away, because JBW insisted it had finished. Of course, deleting it from the COMPLETE tab and then re-adding it worked fine, and it’s back where it should be.

I wish I were braver in order to do some more tests about this theory of mine – but I’m allowing myself to be a tad selfish to see if I can win this auction. Afterwards I may play some more. In the mean time, maybe some others can try this idea and see if it helps.

Vaughn – the sequence you listed did not work for me – first time around. Maybe I followed the recipe badly.
Following your idea about cookies I tried ‘Refresh ebay session’ followed by ‘Update Auctions’. That got a result.
Thanks.
Now I am waiting to see if that holds. Will log in to ebay with Firefox later today to see if that messes it up.
Multiple logins from FF and JBW seemed OK for years – maybe not OK now.
If the fix does not hold then repeating the sequence may still clear the FPs for long enough to be useful.
Fingers crossed.

Topic: (Almost) all auctions showing FP

wakou – I have tried reverting a few times as detailed below.

[Please bear in mind that if I was a JBW expert I might have found and fixed the real problem already. But I am not]

On my linux system I have a desktop shortcut that runs a script.
The shortcut itself has been unmodified for many years.
The script is something like …

#!/bin/sh
/usr/bin/java -Xmx512m -jar ~/JBidwatcher-2.5.2.jar

I usually keep the last few jar versions for days like this.
To revert my system I just edit the script to point to ~/JBidwatcher-2.5.0.jar.

For a ‘pure’ method perhaps you should rename the ‘/home/username/.jbidwatcher’ directory first and start as if JBW was running for the first time.
Any older or newer JBidwatcher.xxx.xx.jar files should be OK if you leave them undisturbed.

I am not always so pure – last time around I ‘reverted’ once with a full clean-out of the database and once without.
I don’t always clean out the config file but I do rely on JBW to rebuild the rest of the files when it needs to.
Someone may tell me off for doing it this way but on previous occasions there were no obvious problems.
I would not expect the ‘upgrade checking’ to work perfectly in these circumstances but I have not left the system ‘reverted’ for long periods.
JBW appears to function OK as 2.5.0 but reverting does not always fix the FP problem (for me).

Any ‘fix’ I have had so far seems to be temporary and goes bad again some hours later and then recovers some hours after that (and so on).
That is why I believe ebay has made a series of changes where some of those changes upset JBW but some didn’t.

Perhaps I have shot myself in the foot by not starting with a clean slate every time when moving to and fro between 2.5.2 to 2.5.0.
If so, now is the time for someone to explain in detail how and why so that the rest of us can learn something.

Changing between some versions of JBW might make it mandatory to start from scratch – If so the details will be in these forums somewhere.
I will admit to being overworked enough to do a few quick searches but not applying ultimate diligence.

[To any trolls – Flame me if you must but what most of us need here is some genuine help and a permanent solution.]

Please mention it in this forum if ‘reverting’ fixes your system for a few hours. a few days or permanently. Thanks.
