Hi, I have been playing with Jbidwatcher ocasionally when auctions finish in the middle of the night,e and it has been sucessful up until recently. Now, (last few snipes) it’s coming up with communications errors about 1/2 hour before the snipe. It logs in fine and updates My eBay listings and everything looks good until it prepares to snipe.

This last time it did it I actually won the bid despite it saying the bid failed! This is the log info from this last one:

Oh,I forgot to say, the snipe did lodge at 03:00:25 above despite the response that the snipe failed (and I won the item)…

Also, I have recently installed a new router (Netcomm NB9W) and was wondering if perhaps this could be causing a problem?

Greetings,
Unfortunately I don’t know, offhand…

It definitely looks like something is timing the connection out after around 20 seconds. However, JBidwatcher loads the item once a minute in the last half hour, so in the display you have there, it looks like it succeeded about 20 times and failed about 10. So you have something which is dropping 1/3 of your connections on the floor…

I wish I knew exactly what it was, but it’s something in the network between you and eBay. It could be your router, your computer losing packets, your service provider having a bad day or packet shaping, all the way up to eBay having a bad set of machines, or doing a software rollout.

I’m really sorry I can’t help more, there’s just no way for me to debug it more than that.

Thanks for the coments Morgan,

Are there any ports in the router that should be specifically opened for the excercise? In hindsight, it only appears to have been happening since the router replacement and is happening on both my computers! The router was installed to provide VoIP and does it very well, I havent noticed any other glitches with any other software, but then I dont think I have any other software that is so time dependant.

Might do some testing on those dummy ebay sales I saw you mention on other posts – both with and without the QoS active on the router.

Will feedback any results I can come up with in case it helps out someone else.

Keep up the good work, I dont how you manage the time!!!!

Cheers, Dave.

I’ve been using jbid watcher for a year or so and I just ran into the same thing in the past few weeks. When I do a ping test on ebay.com, www.ebay.com, or cgi.ebay.com it has a 100% failure. But other sites are all 100% successful (yahoo.com, google.com, etc).

Also traceroute goes into a loop:

Traceroute has started …

traceroute: Warning: www.ebay.com has multiple addresses; using 66.135.208.89

(and it keeps going)

could it be something with ebay?

Greetings,
I think it’s likely that something between alternet and whatever backbone eBay is on is borked.

Given the traceroute you gave, it looks like it’s still a bit away from the eBay network…

That, however, is wildly out of my control. :)
