Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Tips and Tricks / jbidwatcher thief needs to be stopped

The simplest method to discourage this kind of activity is to make it unprofitable. You can do that by putting jBidWatcher up for sale yourself on eBay at a price that makes it pointless to compete. Specifically, I suggest you charge 25 cents. That covers the insertion fee and the final value fee. Of course, the goal is not to have anybody buy it. The goal would be to make it clear to anybody who’s shopping for bidding software that yours is available free. Put jbidwatcher.com link into the listing along with linked screen shots. That way, anyone trying to sell your program would have a hard time charging more than 25 cents, at least until they changed enought that it really couldn’t be recognized anymore. Or if they actually add useful enhancements, you might notice them and incorporate them into the real version. (steal it back.)
The cost of this would be $7.20 per year for 36 insertion fees, with a new listing every 10 days. That assumes nobody ever sends you the 25 cents. On the other hand, you could accept contributions to help defray the cost.
The biggest drawback I see is having to re-list the item every 10 days. But it seems to me that with your skills, you should be able write software that automatically re-inserted your listing whenever the prior one expired.
On top of everything else, this would get your software out to more people. Possibly many more.
Check your paypal account. You’ll find I’ve contributed the first year’s insertion fees. You don’t have to use it for this idea, it’s just a general contribution. But if you like the idea, go for it.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / CVS

I was hoping to access the CVS repository so I could get and idea of what you’re doing. I have no experience with CVS, however, so I tried just following the instructions on the CVS page. The “cvs -d:pserver:anonymous..etc.. login” appears to work, but the “cvs -z3 -d:pser..etc.. co -P modulename” command fails with the message “cvs login: authorization failed: .. rejected access to /cvsroot/jbidwatcher for user anonymous”

Does this mean the current/live source is not available for viewing? Or am I screwing up somehow?

(I tried the web interface, but that only allows access to one file at a time. Very tedious.)

Thanks,

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Tips and Tricks / EBay API availability question

I was hoping you’d say “AHA, why didn’t I think of that! I’ll just add a configuration step that automatically applies for the license and integrates the keys into jBidWatcher.” Or something like that. Wishful thinking, huh?

However, if one still doesn’t have access to the bid API, then there’s really no point, is there?

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Tips and Tricks / EBay API availability question

Hi CyberFOX:
I suppose I’m just going to display my ignorance, but that’s never stopped me before, so: Your discussion about the ebay API uses a grand total of ALL simultaneous instances of your program, not just one. I don’t understand why you are using a cumulative total of jBidWatcher into a huge total, rather than considering each instance to be one program.

How can eBay tell that the API accesses coming from your instance is to be combined with mine? Is there a registration number? If so, why shouldn’t I get my own number, so my totals don’t count into yours?
