Topic: Multiple auctions showing same wrong seller

Morgan, is there any way to show the number of watchers and/or the number of item/page views as a seller? I’ve been reading this thread and am assuming the # of watchers can’t be done. I did download your fix above and am currently running 2.1pre7-
Thanks

Greetings,
The watcher count is generally only available to sellers through the UI, but if you’re logged in to eBay, you can retrieve it as part of adding the item to your watch list. To get technical, if you browse to: http://cgi1.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemM… with your item number after that URL, it’ll return a snippet of text (it’s called JSON) which includes information about the number of watchers (watcherCount).

However, it will also have added it to your My eBay watch list…which is an unfortunate side-effect. What I was doing before was doing it ‘anonymously’, i.e. without any cookies set. It was returning the watcher count despite not passing any cookies in, which was why I made it available. I haven’t even officially released the version that had that feature, and eBay already shut it down. (It now requires cookies, i.e. for you to be logged in, which means it gets added to your actual watchlist.)

sigh Ah well; perhaps another time.

Morgan, does that mean the watcher count is normally only available to sellers? I can’t find it as an option in My eBay, but I’m not a seller.

Greetings,
I’m trying out a new way of getting versions out; I need folks to test them before I release them… I’d like you to try out a pre-prerelease, and let me know if it resolves your issues. (It may warn about a ‘newer version’, 2.1pre6. Ignore it.)

Standalone Windows: http://www.jbidwatcher.com/download/JBidwatcher…
Disk Image (Mac OS X): http://www.jbidwatcher.com/download/JBidwatcher…
Linux .jar: http://www.jbidwatcher.com/download/JBidwatcher…

As per usual, please let me know in as much detail as you can, about any issues you run into! This isn’t an official 2.1pre7 release, but it’s for folks who are willing to spend some extra time helping with the debugging.

Greetings,
I have a fix for the seller name issue, although I’m a little nervous about it, because it relies on something that eBay isn’t showing.

Unfortunately yes, eBay removed anonymous watcherCount retrieval; it means that the only way to pull the watcherCount is to add it to your My eBay. I’ve mostly figured out how to manage an eBay watch list, but I don’t know how many folks would want me to do that…

I have this as well. All sellers are now listed as “a question.”

Also the new and cool bonus feature, seeing the # of watchers for any item, was working until yesterday. Now the column is still there but says “0” watchers for all items (even the ones that I am watching). Morgan, that feature was great while it lasted. I suppose eBay must have changed something.

I’m having the same issue under Windows XP Pro SP3 and JBidwatcher (2.0.1-825). I can access my ebay.com account through Firefox but I cannot update the newer auctions I am watching. I’m in the US.

Thanks much.

Greetings,
No, there are no side effects to deleting that line, but I have no idea how that line got in to your configuration in the first place… Ick; that’ll definitely make it impossible to load auctions.

There should be no overrides, with 2.0.1…

hi there,

adding just the number did not work. Changing country site to ebay.com made no difference.

then i commented out this line in JBidWatch.cfg: #override.ebayServer.viewHost=cgi.ebay.de

and now i can add auctions! Country site setting is ebay.de.

Morgan, are there any side effects to deleting that line?

Greetings,
JBidwatcher doesn’t try to parse ebay.de, it extracts the item number and tries to view it on ebay.com. If ebay.com refuses, it tries to view it on ebay.co.uk. If that doesn’t work, it punts.

Try pasting the listing’s item number instead of the URL; while it should be able to parse the item number out of the URL, pasting just the item number should always work.

Probably not an OS X problem because it works ok for me on 10.5.6, aside from an intermittent network problem (but it seems fine right now). I’m using ebay.ie though, so maybe there’s something different happening on ebay.de now that JBidwatcher can’t parse?

communication error talking to server
I can not add any auction because of this error.
I run version 2.0.1 on a mac 10.5.6
All my java settings should be ok.
I´ve had this error for 6 months now.
I tried to delete all files to do a clean install. no go.
What´s strange : i deleted all files associated w bidwatcher and when i drag it to applications folder and start it, it already has my ebay login data! where from? any files i missed deleting?

Thanks for help
