Topic: incredibly slow to startup

Greetings,
@rwillett – Did you try the pre-release I mentioned above? The infinite redirect you’re seeing is a CAPTCHA message from eBay, unfortunately, but the pre-release should recognize it as such…

This is my first post :)

Anyway, a bit more information to see if that helps.

I’m running Ubuntu 8.10 and downloaded the latest 2.0 jar file.

I executed from the command line

java -Xmx512m -jar /home/rwillett/Desktop/JBidwatcher-2.0.jar

and got the following sent back

I’ve replaced my username and password with XXXXXX to protect the innocent.

The java window is moveable in Linux but none of the buttons etc work as it seems to be waiting on something.

I do NOT have an issue with CPU though the Java process is running at 146.2M which seems quite lot but what do I know.

Topic: incredibly slow to startup

Greetings,
I’ve put up a 2.0.1 pre-release based on SVN revision 819. You can tell the version number by looking in Help | About and looking for 2.0.1pre2-819.

It’s available via:

Windows: http://next.jbidwatcher.com/download/JBidwatche…

Mac OS X: http://next.jbidwatcher.com/download/JBidwatche…

Linux & other: http://next.jbidwatcher.com/download/JBidwatche…

This is a total test version; it will not be very fast, and it will create a really large file named ‘derby.log’ in the JBidwatcher data directory, but if you have any more problems, the logs will help me a lot. It may also create a ‘recovered’ tab, which will have auctions that had gotten orphaned. The listings you added, and couldn’t re-add after closing and restarting aren’t orphaned, they should show up in the ‘right spots’, as per where they were before. It should also fix the CPU overload/freeze on startup.

I believe it will also fix the ‘freeze on test login’ problem. It appears to be a CAPTCHA problem which means JBidwatcher’s not going to be useful to you anyhow until the CAPTCHA goes away, but at least JBidwatcher won’t freak out anymore, and will basically recognize it.

I could really use feedback on this, so I can hopefully release it this weekend.

Hi Not sure if this is useful to you Martin but I am using the same version of JBW on a intel imac and a g5 tower. The imac loads auctions blazingly fast and the G5 painfully slow this behavior only started with version 2.0 alpha/beta and continues with 2.0 release.

Cheers Tim

I updated JBW to the latest version you recommended in the ticket and commented there, but I’ll make note here as well for anyone reading this post.
Version 752 helped the start-up go down to 18 minutes the first time, and then about 20 minutes the second time. So there’s definitely an improvement there. Still a bit of a wait but we’re along the right track.
If there’s anything I can do to assist with files or info please ask.
Thanks for the attention to this!

Well, it took about 28 minutes for JBW to open up. While it was in the process of opening the “javaw.exe” mem usage slowly climbed up to about 86,000 K. When JBW did open, it jumped up to about 211,000 K but the CPU usage has dropped and is jumping between 08-30.
In case it’s of any importance, the version of Java I have on this computer is:
Standard Edition 6
Version 6 Update 6
(build 1.6.0_06-b02

By the way, something that I just noticed. While waiting for JBW to restart I had my Windows Task Manager open and see that while JBW is opening (now on minute 3 of waiting) the “CPU Usage” graph is showing 100%. Under the Processes tab it’s showing “javaw.exe” running about 71,900 K (Mem Usage). JBW is not yet showing under Processes or Applications.
Thought I’d throw that in while seeing it.

Thanks for the quick reply. I’ve sent three logs to the ticket tracker.

Greetings,
I’d appreciate it if you’d grab a log file (any recent one should do, as it sounds like the slow startup happens every time), and either email it to me, or attach it to a ticket in the JBidwatcher ticket tracker so I can see if there’s anything obvious slowing down the startup.

You don’t need to shut down JBidwatcher to do this, and it’d probably be good if you compressed the file (using zip or something like it, if you have it) unless it’s small. You can find the JBidwatcher log files in C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\.jbidwatcher.

Thanks muchly!

Topic: incredibly slow to startup

I have noticed a slow startup or a good bit of time now but hadn’t really thought of commenting on it. This has been at least since last spring when I returned home and started using my home computers again. At first I thought it might be because I was starting some other programs up before JBW, but I’ve repeatedly started JBW as the first program when rebooting and, as noted by the others here, it takes many minutes to strart and log into ebay. I usually just walk away to make something to drink or like to give it time. Of course I only reboot my computer once every couple weeks so for me it’s not a daily thing…otherwise I probably would’ve been voicing my issue here earlier.
I’m running the 2.0 beta 10 right now but as I mentioned before this has been going on through a number of earlier versions.
My data file goes back around 3-4 years so not sure if that has anything to do with it.
System is XP Pro SP3
P4 (2.4), 2Gig ram homebuilt Intel based motherboard
For me it’s not a killer issue since, as I said, I only reboot every so often but just wanted to add my comment here.
Thanks-

Greetings,
Try 2.0beta9 from http://next.jbidwatcher.com, and see if that helps any.

Make sure to back up your .jbidwatcher directory first, just to be safe.

[UPDATE]

i don’t think the slow startup is related to the number of completed auctions stored, after all. i’ve just temporarily removed all completed auctions from the ‘<user>/.jbidwatcher’ folder [and all references to them from the ‘<user>/.jbidwatcher/jBidWatch.cfg’ file and jbidwatcher is still taking an age to open.

i think i’ll try one of the newer betas and see if that makes any difference

Topic: incredibly slow to startup

of late i’ve noticed that jbidwatcher seems to hang for ages on the ‘loading auctions’ stage of startup. on occasion it can take ten minutes or more til the programme finally opens. i’m wondering if this is a problem with the current release of jbidwatcher itself, or is it due to the fact that – through long usage – i have a hell of a lot of auctions listed under the ‘complete’ tab? could it be that loading three years worth of completed auctions is causing jbidwatcher to take so long to launch?

if the latter, then it would be nice if jbidwatcher could archive older completed auctions [i like to keep them as a record of what i’ve bought and sold over the years] and only load them into memory on demand – instead of having to load all that info in every time the app is started.

[EDIT]

whoops! – forgot to include the following system info:

mac OSX 10,4,11
powerbook G4 1,33GHZ 1GHZ RAM
jbidwatcher v2,0beta7
