Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Development / 10.8+ Is there a real reason?

Greetings,
I wrote a post on the reasons why which might help some.

I don’t like leaving older systems behind either, but the combination of upcoming security issues and the Apple/Oracle transition of who owns Mac Java have really made it hard to do anything but a clean break.

In this case, I’m fairly sure that the upgrade to 10.8 as a minimum requirement is pretty well-founded.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / 500 error on update file

Greetings,
My database went absolutely nuts; somehow it started repeating what were supposed to be unique, auto-incremented primary key ids, which prevented a whole bunch of things from working. :(

It’s fixed now… Sorry about that.

Greetings,
Sorry, my back-end database went wonky, started repeating a series of supposedly unique ids, which prevented the download. :(

I’ve fixed it; it should be working again.

I get the same thing — unable to download anything.

I even tried to go to the download page — not even an index, so there’s obviously some sort of problem. Hope it gets fixed soon.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / force JBidwatcher to re-import auctions.xml

OK. I was able to fix the problem by myself. I had to go out and find an ancient copy of JBidwatcher 2.1.3. In addition to renaming jbdb, I also renamed JBidWatch.cfg so the program was forced to recreate both from scratch. After the reconstruction, you can go back to using a more recent version of JBidwatcher. I still think a menu option to recreate the database would be a LOT more user-friendly.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / force JBidwatcher to re-import auctions.xml

Hi

My Win7x64 machine BSOD’ed this morning and my JBidwatcher has been unhappy ever since. It seems the program will hang while loading auctions. I checked in the process manager. There is no disk activity or CPU activity. The program simply becomes a zombie. I tried renaming the jbdb to jbdb.bak and restarting, but it failed to re-import the auctions.xml file. It’s just an empty table. I checked the auctions.xml file in a text editor. It looks fine. I even tried using one of the many many many (really, why does JBidwatcher keep so many?) backup auctions.xml files and none of those work either. I tried re-installing Java 8. I even tried downgrading to Java 7. I also tried older and newer versions of JBidwatcher. Same result. Hangs if trying to open the current database. Completely ignores the auctions.xml file if I try to force it to rebuild the database. Is there a way to really really really FORCE JBidwatcher to rebuild the Derby database using the auctions.xml file other than renaming the database folder (which doesn’t seem to be working)? An import auctions menu item would be super useful. I’m at wit’s end, having spent a half day on this already. I’m attaching my debugging output:

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Emergeny fix needed for random ebay times?

I just added viv.ebay.com as 127.0.0.1 in my hosts, so now time sync fails, instead of getting a bogus time. Hopefully no more snipes lost due to this. I rather wanted the one that ended this morning!

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Emergeny fix needed for random ebay times?

Every snipe I’ve done the last two days has failed. It now seems I’m getting the bogus server times every time now.

errors.110.log:Tue Apr 05 14:17:48 PDT 2016: Time delta with ebay.com is -29177
errors.110.log:Tue Apr 05 16:51:50 PDT 2016: Time delta with ebay.com is -29887
errors.110.log:Tue Apr 05 16:56:58 PDT 2016: Time delta with ebay.com is -29807
errors.111.log:Wed Apr 06 10:01:21 PDT 2016: Time delta with ebay.com is -31016

I just set my snipe time to 45 seconds before the end of the auction to compensate, but if I get a non-bogus time, I’ll be bidding too early.

The option to disable time sync needs to work…

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Development / 10.8+ Is there a real reason?

I ask because 10.8 was the first release that required a true 64-bit EFI which many machines don’t have (my MacPro MacPro1,1 for example). Even though there are machines made in the same time frame that will support 10.8, mine won’t and never will.

I think using an older machine for things like eBay is a perfect use since they’re stuck with 10.7.5 and cannot be upgraded.

Is there something that happened in the latest release that absolutely requires 10.8? It seems many projects just up the requirements without any particular reason to do so, and it leaves lots of perfectly lovely utitlty-grade machines stranded.

Is there something that requires 10.8, or could it possibly still support 10.7.5?

Thanks,

Steve

P.S. I’m a Mac and IOS developer, so I could help sort out the technical details though I’m not a Java programmer by any means.

Everything failed today due to the time sync issue. Another person started another thread with the same issue. This needs a fix ASAP, even if it’s just making the option to disable time sync actually disable time sync…

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Windows 10 compatible?

Ebay’s time servers are returning incorrect times, which is causing jbidwatcher to snipe at the wrong time. I don’t know if this is accidental (ebay’s server clocks are wrong), or an intentional attempt at dissuading people from using snipe programs. I started a thread about this (Emergency fix needed etc), but I don’t know if the author has even looked at it…

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Windows 10 compatible?

Hi,

I’ve been using JBidwatcher for quite a few years now and have never had a problem until now.
I recently built a new computer and installed Windows 10. This is the first time I’ve used JBW on the new machine and the bid failed.

As you can see, the auction ended 21:02:03 and the snipe was attempted at 21:02:13.
Instead of firing 9 seconds early, it fired 10 seconds late.
So, I went to the help menu in JBW and most of those items don’t work.

Is this a JBW issue or a Win 10 issue?
Is it one problem or multiple problems?

My system is configured to get its time from a centralized time server and I still have had the last five or six snipes fail with this same message. I don’t think it’s a time thing. I think it’s faulty code.

I have unchecked the “Time Synchronization” box and restarted jbidwatcher. I’ve checked the advanced tab and timesync.enabled is false. But it’s still syncing time, and still missing snipes due to ebay returning bogus times. How do I disable time sync? Time sync is currently badly badly broken.

BUG! Disabling time sync only disables it for the time shown in the UI. It still gets a time from ebay and offsets the time remaining by it.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Emergeny fix needed for random ebay times?

I don’t know if ebay is having time sync issues of their own, or if it’s a way of trying to detect and penalize snipe programs, but the incidences of wrong time syncs are increasing. I figured it was just me, but then someone in another thread posted the exact same issue and times.

I’ve confirmed ebay’s time page, http://viv.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?EbayTime, is returning incorrect times. Reloading the page repeatedly in a browser sometimes gives the bogus times that jbidwatcher is getting. The page is loading quickly; it’s not a network delay anywhere.

The current offset seems to be a minute behind.

jbidwatcher might need code to ignore time syncs more than some number of seconds different from the previous time sync, get the time from other sources (like the time remaining returned when updating soon-ending auctions), or something… because the bogus syncs are guaranteed failed snipes.

As a workaround, I’ve disabled time syncing… hopefully it doesn’t cause other issues…

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Unknown error sniping on 2.99pre5 on Mac

I’ve been getting the exact same random funky +30 seconds time deltas. I’m starting to think ebay is intentionally fucking with the times it gives to clients it thinks might be snipe programs. Or they just have one of their server clocks wrong… but I don’t think they’re that incompetent.
