Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Running JBidWatcher

I’am using Linux Fedora2 and have jre-1.0.5 installed and
JBidWatcher-0.9.5.jar in my /home/user directory, If I double click on JBidWatcher.jar file, I get a window that opens up
in the filemanager that shows a large number of files that has
headings of | Size | Method | Size Now | Ratio | Timestamp
but no gui’s with tabs.
What has gone wrong ?

Forgot to add, that if I ping cgi.ebay.com from the command line, I get a ip address, so the problem isn’t dns.

Does JBidWatcher work with a NTLM proxy? I’ve been unable to get it working, as I always get this:

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Tips and Tricks / alert when auction ending

Thanks for the great program. Any way you can incorporate an alert when the auction is ending? Perhaps you could make it so that we only get alerts for items that we check the “alert me” box. The user could also define how to be alerted (sound, email, etc…).

Again, thanks.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Question regarding My Ebay auction loading

Greetings,
While I note that it’s working, I want to clear up the confusion about the browse target.

The browse target is solely for where the browser launches, when you say ‘open in browser’. It’s NOT what is used for actual retrieval of the item information.

Why is this?

Because JBidwatcher has to interpret the page, reading the labels from the HTML, and figuring out what the data after each label is. This is much easier to do (and maintain) for a single language, rather than implementing the same effective code for a half-dozen languages. Since all ebay sites share the same back-end database, I can look up the data on ebay.com, use a known set of labels to search for, and it is basically transparent to the end user.

I hope this helps explain the issue a little better.

I’m sorry, but as far as I know, there is no solution, jet.

Hi Rainer,
if you do use an Proxy-server it might be the same problem as described in Topic “JBidwatcher and Proxy server?”.

Hi all,

we are running 0.9.5 version in this environment (see above).
During the start phase we can see this message:

Error communicating with the server

and later on

Successfully synchronized time with ebay

It’s no problem to add, search auctions but if we want to bid we get
a Bid Alert. The errorlog file says this:

couldn’t sign in javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException: Remote host closed connection during handshake at sun.reflect.NativeConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance0(Native Method) at sun.reflect.NativeConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance(Unknown Source) at sun.reflect.DelegatingConstructorAccessorImpl.newInstance(Unknown Source) at java.lang.reflect.Constructor.newInstance(Unknown Source) at sun.net.www.protocol.http.HttpURLConnection$6.run(Unknown Source) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at sun.net.www.protocol.http.HttpURLConnection.getChainedException(Unknown Source) at sun.net.www.protocol.http.HttpURLConnection.getInputStream(Unknown Source) at sun.net.www.protocol.https.HttpsURLConnectionImpl.getInputStream(Unknown Source) at Http.receivePage(Http.java:162) at ebayServer.getSignInCookie(ebayServer.java:1025) at ebayServer.getSignInCookie(ebayServer.java:1071) at ebayServer.getNecessaryCookie(ebayServer.java:911) at AuctionServer.getAuction(AuctionServer.java:452) at AuctionServer.loadAuction(AuctionServer.java:496) at AuctionServer.reloadAuction(AuctionServer.java:545) at AuctionEntry.update(AuctionEntry.java:1174) at JBidMouse.actualUpdate(JBidMouse.java:1213) at JBidMouse.DoBid(JBidMouse.java:1099) at JBidMouse.DoAction(JBidMouse.java:1509) at JTabManager.actionPerformed(JTabManager.java:125) at javax.swing.AbstractButton.fireActionPerformed(Unknown Source) at javax.swing.AbstractButton$Handler.actionPerformed(Unknown Source) at CookieJar.getAllCookiesFromPage(CookieJar.java:42) at ebayServer.getSignInCookie(ebayServer.java:1023) Caused by: java.io.EOFException: SSL peer shut down incorrectly at com.sun.net.ssl.internal.ssl.InputRecord.read(Unknown Source)

Any idea what’s going on here?

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Question regarding My Ebay auction loading

I am trying to load the currently watched items from my localized (de) ebay site. Although I set the browse target to ebay.de the program still insists on querying my.ebay.com 1.

Is this behaviour intentional and did I misinterpret the meaning of the browse target? If this is the case how can I gather my watched auctions from localized ebay sites?

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / JBidwatcher and Proxy server?

Hi everyone,
I have the same problems (I put a Request in the Bug-Tracking named:“Bids and snipes are not working (proxy)” opend date: 3.11.04. As the problem seems impossible to be solved in the JBidwatcher, I now linked my Request to this Forum.

I tried ping cgi.ebay.com, and i’m getting no answers (Time-out-Error). But DNS seems to work (an IP-Adress after the cgi.ebay.com is beeing displayed: [216.113.176.10]).

P.S. Thank you Morgan for this great programm

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / JBidwatcher and Proxy server?

Hi,

Interestingly, I’ve left JBidwatcher running for a few hours today and it seems to be working fine through the proxy server. Interestingly, though, it seems to be using the http_proxy/ftp_proxy environment variables because I have “No Proxy” set in the preferences. Hmm…

-Jeff

PS. I just tested bidding on an item but that failed with the error:

“Bidding apparently failed for an unknown reason. Check the auction in the browser, to see if the bid went through anyway.”

—which it didn’t.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / JBidwatcher and Proxy server?

Hi Morgan,

Actually, that’s not correct. The point of a proxy server is to limit user access to the internet to a single point of contact. That includes DNS lookups. When a proxy server is in use, the entire url is passed to the proxy server for the proxy server to resolve the address and return the requested data. No validation or resolution of the address (name or IP) should be performed by the application.

I use many applications which work just fine with our proxy and socks servers (opera, netscape, firefox, mozilla, bidwatcher, gaim, ayttm, ssh to name a few) and the DNS server my resolv.conf points to does not resolve any addresses on the internet.

I used JBidwatcher over the weekend at home and it’s got a lot of awesome features. I’d like to be able to use it at work as well.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks for the great application!

-Jeff

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Unknown error when sniping...

Greetings,
Oof… Enough people have run into this, that I’ll really need to try and put code in to ‘detect’ bad username/password combos. It’s just that for reasonable security reasons, eBay doesn’t distinguish from bad user/pass vs. other errors in submitting the page.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Nuke Tab???

Morgan, you mention a “deleted section” in this thread. What is that?

I have always seen auctions that were deleted come back again at the next search (on winxp). And, I had requested an “ignore tab” where I could put bogus search results, but your message implies that equivalent functionality is already there.

Am I missing something?

Thanks much for your efforts,

Bill

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / JBidwatcher and Proxy server?

Greetings,
I believe it’s a DNS issue. Someone else mentioned that they had a similar problem, where for some reason they didn’t get DNS to their local computer, because they were behind a corporate firewall of some sort.

While JBidwatcher CAN talk to eBay through a SOCKS proxy, it still requires being able to resolve the IP address of eBay before contacting the SOCKS proxy. This is because it needs to hand an IP address to the SOCKS proxy. (This is all in the Java libraries, not my code, so it’s not something I can change, unfortunately.)

If you go to a command line, and try:
ping cgi.ebay.com
if that works (or more accurately if it at least resolves the IP address for cgi.ebay.com), JBidwatcher should work, even if through a proxy. If it doesn’t, you’ve got to get DNS (host name resolution, translating host names to IP addresses) working on your machine first.

More info:

I tried installing on a computer that doesn’t have to go through the proxy server but many other things are similar (like the OS version, java version, etc.)

My bids work now. Are there known problems with going through a proxy (squid)? Or is there something else I can look for?

OK, I tried a locally compiled version from source and tried just bidding manually on an item. The UI hangs for a while but I’m evenually able to get it back by suspending/resuming the job (unix job control). It reports that the bid has failed somehow and the following is in the log:

Sat Nov 27 12:02:43 MST 2004: Bidding $2,151.00 on 1 item[s] of Yamaha : TT : Yamaha

I am going through a squid proxy. And I do get a “Error communicating with server” when I first fire up jbidwatcher. But it seems to start communicating on its own after a few minutes and it can then update the auctions OK on the screen.
