Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / 2.99pre4 won't start, dies at "Starting scripts"

Ok, since this one worked, that means the problem is the <script> in the ruby backtrace. That means this forum lets me include javascript without filtering it? That is SCARY. And dangerous. And makes me very happy I did not use the same login info for this forum as anywhere else.

Third time’s the charm? “Beast” is broken! The backtrace breaks the post. I can not edit the post. I can not delete the post. I can’t even reply to the post! So this one has all the backtraces cut. Please delete the other two duplicate topics.

Just downloaded 2.99pre4, won’t start. Downloaded latest jre, no change. Removed my .jbidwatcher directory, it prompted for my login and tested it, then no change.

At this point the startup window is displaying “Starting scripts”. I let it sit there for 15 minutes with nothing happening. Ctrl-C or killing it is required.

2.5.6 is still working fine, where fine includes all the known bugs. (And one that may or may not be known… sometimes during network issues it decides that auctions must have been removed from the server, moving them to the completed list and cancelling snipes…)

The startup process for 2.99pre4, even before where it fails, is SLOW. Probably around a minute “building interface” etc. 2.5.6 does not have this issue.

Thanks,

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Tips and Tricks / An alternate "Snipe".

I think ebay sets a token from JBW, and not a password is stored on JBW server, I store my password on my computer’s JBW program, not on someone else server that I have no control with and I trust eBay as that’s where I send the snipe to, so the token is okay for me.

Sadly the new version 2.9.9 gives an error 404 for both Windows versions for download? Linux & Mac OS X both seem to be okay. Just a temporary minor glitch I’m hoping?

Yes but then you do the same on JBidwatcher, I guess there is an element of risk but Just snipe has been around for around ten years.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Tips and Tricks / deleting from Derby

Greetings,
The next version of JBidwatcher has a scripting console, where you could write commands something like:

Auction.where(['created_at &lt; ?', 90.days.ago]).delete_all
Entry.where(['created_at &lt; ?', 90.days.ago]).delete_all

Then close and re-open JBidwacher.

I’m not guaranteeing that syntax, but it’ll be something like that.

— Morgan

n.b. Just tested it and that syntax currently works in JBidwatcher-2.99pre4, and I can’t see why it would change before the full 3.0 release.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Tips and Tricks / Feature request: maximum total bid amount

Greetings,
This is, in fact, the direction I’m kind of going. I’ve eliminated the old web interface (I’m sorry!) including the internal RSS feeds and the cache view of item listings, almost all XML-related features, finally gotten rid of mature audience item bidding, eliminated a bunch of fallbacks for features that have been in Java core for years now, and a bunch of other features that were good at one time, but now are impossible to maintain. I’m using eBay’s in-page metadata and their API-ish ‘ViewItemLite’ public JSON when I can. I removed the crappy TableSorter code that’s been out of date since 2007, standardized on Java 1.8 (which I’m now shipping with it on OS X and Windows so folks don’t have to run on the Java upgrade treadmill)…

However, I also added a scripting language (Ruby) and implemented a bunch of features in Ruby, so they’re a little easier to iterate on. I also included Ruby features that will let me re-implement the web-server MUCH better (not quite Rails-in-JBidwatcher, but close!) if it’s useful in the future. (So can anyone who knows Ruby scripting, in fact!)

Now I’ve just got to release the !#$! thing. Which has taken me months, since it’s been in a reasonable state to ship at least as a pre-release.

As to the @jssr67’s original feature request, I presume it means, ‘Given a total of $500, snipe on these 12 items, but if the cumulative total would exceed $500, stop sniping’. It’s an interesting idea, but I won’t implement it. What I may do, however, is implement features that let YOU (or any other user) implement it in Ruby, maybe with some syntactic sugar to make it easier. Then a little bit of sharing, e.g. on the forum or in a repository of script addons for JBidwatcher, and you can browse through and find the feature you need/want…

As @Dave Howell says; I’m done making JBidwatcher more complicated. I’m going to start stripping pieces out of it, and (maybe) re-implementing them in Ruby, and (in some cases) making them optional.

Hi all, sorry if I’m preaching to the converted or the posting of links isn’t actually okay but I thought because of the many comments of lost snipes I would mention the programme that I have used for over ten years & it’s never failed me. It’ easy to use & as well with one minor restriction it’s totally FREE to use. The limitation is you get FIVE (5) free snipes per week & if you need more then there is a monthly fee.

Since I rarely snipe (I buy lots of “buy now”) it suits me fine as it may well suit others.

The link is https://www.justsnipe.com/ or Just Snipe.

As I say it is on-line sniping, highly reliable & easy to use. I hope this may help anyone who is not aware of it?

Hi,

My jbidwatcher 2.5.6-11 displayed the yellow light from around May/June. I tried clean install and password changes to no avail. It was not working in the beginning of December.

But with the New Year the green light is back and all appears normal!

Happy New Year Sniping to Morgan and all fellow snipers :-)

Cheers, Ola

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Adding an item.

Hi, I’m new to JBidwatcher (yesterday) & it looks fine, however is this normal or a bug?

1. I copy from eBay the item number.
2. In JBidwatcher I click on add.
3. I can’t right click & paste so I am forced to use Ctrl + V, is this right?
4. The OK button is almost obscured as the box is too small.

Thanks all!!!

I’m not Morgan, but this is one of the many features that seems reasonable, but that he shouldn’t do. JBidWatcher needs fewer features, not more. Each little feature, however reasonable, is just a bit more code to maintain, and, as is pretty clear from the fact we haven’t had an upgrade to JBid in almost two years, there’s too much code already. Toss the web interface (which I frequently use), abandon multisniping (which I love dearly), forget the MySQL option (which I used for a while), if that’s what it takes to keep JBidWatcher alive and fresh.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Tips and Tricks / Shared databases on different computers?

I’d try running just a single copy, and using the web interface to make changes remotely, first, if possible. You probably could use Dropbox, but I think I’d try running it off a thumbdrive first, to make it a lot harder to run multiple simultaneous instantiations.

On the other hand, if you have two copies running and they both try to snipe the same auction, so what? One of the two will get there first. The other one will submit what is now an invalid bid (“Sorry, you already bid that much. You have to bid more or it doesn’t count.”) and have no effect.

Kind of? I realize this is like mowing your lawn with a nuclear-powered laser-bladed hoverdrone, but I tidied up my JBid database a few years ago by going right into the database and executing SQL code directly on the data. (After making a copy of the DB files, of course.) I’ve been using RazorSQL as my ‘talk to databases’ tool for years, and I think it’s rather good. There’s a 30-day free trial.

I am not affiliated with RazorSQL in any way at all except as a customer (and I’m running a really old version).

{bump}

Me too! I miss multisniping! I need to replace my Magic Trackpad. This is something that there’s many of, and the price tends to be rather variable, it’s a perfect candidate for multisniping.

I"m desperate enough that I even went looking for alternatives. Meh. I do NOT want to give my ebay login info to some web site. Not that I’m likely to, since so far, none of them seem to offer multisniping.

Let me amend my last post; just as a lark I tried my husband’s login, and it worked. So go figure; at least one is working, for now, though I’m not sure how excited he will be if I start buying underwear through his user account. :)

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / JBIDWATCHER 2.56 NOT WORKING WITH EBAY.

I got the “Yellow Button Of Doom” about a month ago, and as advised, stopped using JBid. When I log into Ebay directly, I don’t get any Captcha challenge, but under either of our profiles through Jbid it’s consistently been the “it’s impossible to login until it’s fixed” message.

I waited a month and just tried again, and nope, failure, which means broken, at least for me. Really too bad; first they buy and wreck Auction Sentry, and now this. :(

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / German ebay detects JBidwatcher and blocking my IP???

Almost certainly not. Could be any number of reasons – error in the listing, a policy delisting by eBay that was then corrected, etc…

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / German ebay detects JBidwatcher and blocking my IP???

Hi, here is what happened….tell me if I am crazy. After setting up a snipe on german ebay…..the item on the german ebay was no longer available. I could not look for the item via my browser….also soon after, Jbidwatcher listed the auction as “unknown”. I shutdown everything and the next morning, I found the item again on german ebay. Is german ebay detecting the Jbidwatchers queries and then blocking my IP? If so, is there a way to turn off the querying by Jbidwatcher and just fire off the bid per the setting?
