Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / 2.99pre4 multiple bugs

Ebay’s been prompting me to change my secret questions roughly forever. I don’t have any set, and don’t intend to. They always make you pick from a fixed list of questions. I rarely if ever have actual answers to any of them. So I have to make things up. And if I don’t remember my password, I’m certainly not remembering the answer I made up to some random question. Setting them decreases my account security, while increasing the chance of my being unable to recover access to my account. It’s never been a problem before… And after restarting jbidwatcher, it wasn’t a problem still.

Failing in the middle of a bunch of snipes is bad… If it had failed in advance, I could have manually bid or started troubleshooting. But failing when I no longer have the time to fix it sucks. It’s unlikely to need new login cookies within a few seconds of a successful snipe.

It didn’t even attempt to place the bids. There’s no reason to stop in-progress snipes because of a possible login issue – the worst they’ll do is fail due to not being logged in. Even if it thinks the snipes will fail, try anyway, and keep trying until the auction is over.

The second one was just a spare lens for my camera… didn’t really need it. The first time was about 20 lots of carbide tooling for my machine shop. It all sold stupidly cheap too… About $5k of new and like-new equipment went for about $100. Never seen as good of a deal on such tooling before. Going to have to buy it all at normal or retail prices now. And the two items it won before failing were the least useful of them, and they’re not usable without the accessories that were listed separately and it never bid on, but I had to pay for them anyway. :(

It says it cancelled the snipe because there was less than three seconds left, when there’s actually two minutes left. Sounds like some part of it didn’t correctly check the time remaining? Correct behavior would have been to immediately retry the login, and try getting the bid form anyway…. and keep retrying until the auction ended. Not just sit there doing nothing for two minutes…

I’m not angry at you (you spent many hours writing a huge piece of free software!), just pissed off in general… It’s my fault for trusting something I actually needed to sniping. From now on anything that I’ll be really pissed off if I don’t win, I’m bidding manually. Rather than jbidwatcher failing, my connection could have failed, laptop could have died, a backhoe could have taken out the fiber optic line, whatever… waiting until the last minute is a bad idea in general, regardless of what software you use.

There’s four things ending tonight I mildly want. Set snipes on them. Will see what happens…

Greetings,
The problem exiting is strange; it seems like it closed the DB connection too early.

failed to snipe!!!! argh! I needed that!!!

From what I can tell of the URL, eBay is prompting you to change your secret question; it failed the login because it didn’t get past that, probably a redirect loop because it never gets fixed. (The length kept growing because the URL was being redundantly encoded over and over and over.) I don’t know if JBidwatcher had the right cookies at that point or not, unfortunately.

Tried a snipe again today, because I wasnâ??t able to be home. Failed again, with some different login issue.

That auction ended at 15:02:53. JBidwatcher was trying to pre-snipe (login, get the bid page, so all it has to do is submit the bid page and cookie) two minutes in advance. Oh! That’s bad… Yeah, there’s a fall-through if there’s plenty of time to re-try the snipe, it queues it to re-snipe…but then immediately cancels it, because the resnipe method doesn’t return true.

For what it’s worth (not very much, I know) you’d still be angry at me. If it failed to log in, it probably would have failed to log in again, but canceling the snipe at the first failure is probably still wrong.

For the problem with bidding on a lot of things at once… It’s unusual for eBay to request a change of your security questions, but I can imagine that when they see two fast logins (and bids) in a row, and then a 3rd login comes in, that it might have triggered a security aspect of their system.

It’s sadly hard to figure out just how often to log in, that it stays below their threshold of security warnings, but keeps the login cookies fresh enough to safely bid without being re-challenged for a login.

I didn’t need this item as badly as I needed the ones yesterday, but it’s obvious I can no longer snipe. At least I didn’t get completely fucked like the items yesterday… I guess I could have tried cancelling the two of the set that I did win, but there’s no reason to screw the seller because of my problems bidding. I think the amount of money I lost yesterday exceeds the total amount I’ve ever saved by sniping. From now on, only sniping stuff I don’t care if I win or not, as utterly stupidly failing in the middle of sniping on a set of items is not ok.

This seriously fucking sucks. It was a set of items I was sniping, all ending at approximately the same time. I won the first two of them, but not the other 15-ish. Every single one of them ended for well under my snipe. It started looping that on the console, ever-growing. Now I have completely useless items I have to pay for but I can’t use, and don’t have the items that I needed! I know you’re providing this software free, but it just cost me a whole lot of money. :(

I guess I’m going to have to stop sniping. I can’t have that happen again… I really needed those, and should not have trusted sniping software. Now I’m fucked. My fault, I will not make that mistake again.

Minor bug/feature request… remember sort order from last time the client was started. I usually keep it sorted by time left, but on restart it’s not sorted by anything, just keeps the same order as last time… which looks fine until you add an item and it appears at the bottom of the list instead of the sorted location, and you have to click the time left column again.

Also been having problems exiting now… takes over a minute with a whole bunch of database messages and exceptions being dumped to the console.

I edited out 99% of it. It’s about a thousand line backtrace, and it repeats as fast as it can for a while.

The memory usage is pretty horrible… I have to restart it daily to keep it from consuming multiple gigs of ram. If it were C I’d say you’re leaking badly, but java isn’t supposed to let you do that…

Thanks again,

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / 2.99pre4 won't start, dies at "Starting scripts"

Greetings,
I think I figured out a solution for the ‘Invalid index’ problem; I think it’s notifying an empty tab (known as categories inside JBidwatcher) to mark an auction as being updated, and since that tab is empty, it’s trying to update the zeroth row, and there isn’t one.

I’ve committed a fix for that, so it doesn’t throw exceptions as much, although the more interesting question is why it is trying to notify a tab about an auction that’s not in that tab… :(

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Unknown error sniping on 2.99pre5 on Mac

Hi Gang -

Twice in a row I got this error on the latest version (2.99pre5) for Mac. I had my time synced, etc. I tried to get the log as in the FAQ but I wasn’t able to find it in the ~/.jbidwatcher as instructed either.
The FAQ reads that the logs are available while the program is open. Well, I closed it since the error.
Anyone might have an idea what I might be doing wrong?

thanks

Sounds good… I’ll wait until you package up another jar, as the jdk is an annoyingly large download. Any luck with a new classloader?

Greetings,
I have committed a fix for the refresh issue; it should also fix the exception problem. The fix also consists mostly of deleting code, which is my favorite kind of fix. :)

Not the IndexOutOfBoundsException issue, though. That is because it’s somehow being asked to render a row beyond the length of the table. :(

Comment Topic: Announcements / Can't download?

over time when your DB gets large and sometimes it will get to be so large your JBW will slow to crawl doing refresh or update… I constantly delete all items and reload from my eBay Watch List …. because over time, those listings although is tracked on your JBW, will no longer show on internet from eBay servers. Your best bet on archiving is to actually save those listings you wish to keep for any future references in PDF file or whatever format you wish from eBay server when it’s still available online. Ended auction after 90-days will be removed from eBay public servers and you will no longer be able to view them….

When I do clean up on my JBW, it runs fast and lean and snipe never failed for me. I have archives of those PDF files of the listings of items I won before….. That’s how I do it.

That ghost auction seems to have stopped coming back.

In preferences, under the My JBidwatcher tab, I have not checked the My JBidwatcher box.
I don’t use eBay’s Watch List.
But don’t want to clear all past and ended auctions from my eBay account.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / 2.99pre4 Won't Launch on OS X 10.11.2

Thank you for your explanations, Morgan. That’s too bad as jbidwatcher was one of my favorite software and I am getting upset by not being able to use it. I am in such time zone that most auctions end in a very awkward time for me – I can’t stay awake till 4-5am to be able to bid manually…

Is it possible for jbidwatcher to pretend it is one of the known browsers by mimicking its signature? I remember that a while ago there was some software for downloading entire websites for offline viewing – and there was a feature built in – it could be configured to pretend to be one or another browser. Is it possible to implement something like that?

Comment Topic: Announcements / Can't download?

try login to your ebay account on browser, and to MyeBay and select and delete all “past” and ended auctions from your ebay list. otherwise they will come back on JBW, it happened to my older versions too, but simply reomove from eBay and delete from JBW, they never come back.

Greetings,
I’m not as ‘furry’ as I once was; that was a long time ago. What’s mostly left is a lot of very nice art, and an enduring love of foxes, which actually pre-dates being aware of furries. :)

You’re absolutely right on the conditional being unnecessary. As with most things wrong with code, it was a premature optimization. I think I tried to use a different method to do the update if it’s one line, but that version never got committed, and I never cleaned it up.

It’s also possible that tableChanged caused a redraw with my old table view code, but when I tried to use the standard table (instead of the one I’d hacked up in awful ways over a decade and a half) it’s not sending the right message anymore…

Thankfully that has nothing to do with sniping, it’s just a display error.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / 2.99pre4 Won't Launch on OS X 10.11.2

Greetings,
@vahegan – It’s a security measure on eBay’s part. They’ve probably dropped a cookie marking that one browser as trustworthy, but because the other browser (and JBidwatcher) appear as different browsers, it treats them differently. Unfortunately the only thing that I’ve found that cures the captcha is time. :(

Oh, I played with a different browser and found out a strange thing. When I am using to login with the password which the system remembered in keychain, it never requests to enter any captcha, it just logs in.

When I am trying to login into eBay from a clean browser, I enter the password and then it tells me that the login was incorrect and offers to re-enter the password AND a captcha. When I enter the very same password along with the captcha, it logs me in. When I log out and try to log in, again, it doesn’t ask for a captcha and again reports that password was incorrect and a captcha – and the password works.

I don’t quite understand what’s going on with eBay, but that’s quite annoying…

Thank you, Morgan, I installed the pre5 and it now opens.
Unfortunately, I am still unable to use the program, I am getting a message “eBay has put a captcha” all the time. Last time I tried it quite a few months ago and I was hoping that by not using the sniper, the captcha would be removed, but no luck. Also, I never get any captcha to enter when I manually log in using the browser – this is only present when I am trying to use jbidwatcher…

Comment Topic: That's SO beta! / JBidWatcher 2.99pre4

Hi Morgan,

Thanks for your continued support of jBidWatcher! The beta is cool, but there are at least two problems with it that made me run screaming back to an older version 1) My ebay userID and current time keep flickering up and down by a few pixels every second. 2) I can no longer drag and drop an auction from RSSReader directly onto the jBidWatcher window. I am using Win7x64.

Cheers!

This is quicker by 2+ minutes :)

It loads and logs in to ebay fine.
I can add items ok.

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Help / Feature request: Drag to Dock Icon

Hi!

After reading the forums today I found out that you can add auctions by drag & drop. However, only if you drag to the open window of JBidwatcher (or I am doing something wrong). Would it be possible to implement dragging to the dock icon (I know that at least in OSX that works for some applications)? I don’t know how much work would be involved, but if it was a quick fix it would be a very neat addition to this already great program.

Cheers, Alex

You’re a geeky furry coder and have a wife and kids? Impossible!! :)

The exceptions come and go, but the time left non-updating is constant.

I haven’t seriously written any Java in many years… like 1.1 was new and shiny and I had to rtfm the new event model. My ability to spot tricky issues with current java code is limited at best. I also have absolutely no java tools other than the JRE installed.

What is the point of the conditional there? The only time they’d equal is when they’re both zero, since first is always zero. And it makes exactly the same call as if the test were not there. It’s not going to be the current issue, but that’s the first thing I spotted looking at that code.

I don’t think the non-updating and the exceptions are related. The exceptions should be easy to fix by just catching that exception and skipping everything, because there’s no time left column to update. I think it’s normal behavior when you’re on the completed tab.

The fact that it appears every second suggests that it’s being called correctly, but the tablemodelevent isn’t causing a redraw. I’ve been poking at the java docs trying to figure out how exactly a tablechanged causes a redraw, but it’s beyond my java skills.

Why does one use table.getModel().getRowCount() and the other table.getRowCount()? The jtable getrowcount makes some mention of space, and might not be the same? Should lastrow also be table.getModel().getRowCount()?

Got a new error:

at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:745)

Fortunately I was watching it (after it failed to snipe yesterday and I missed something) and manually bid. It looks like a reasonable bid page (title is Place Bid) looking at the errors.log.

While poking at the code, I saw the thumbnail scaling code in tablemodel… that conditional set looks a little tortured (could be easily replaced by two conditionals), but I don’t see any obvious way it’d decide not to scale an image. must have been elsewhere.

Greetings,
@bushytails – Are you also still having trouble with that exception in the logs?

If you look at the source code for the stack trace you posted, you can see that’s the method that’s updating ‘Time left’. So the two problems are tightly tied; somehow the table can not find the ‘Time left’ column when it’s trying to update.

That code is very specifically the code that tells the ‘Time left’ column to update every second.

So I now see that exception when I’m on the ‘Completed’ tab, but not on the ‘Current’ tab with a ‘Time left’ visible. (Thanks for the note that it only shows up on the console, not the log; that was a key insight!) I’m also seeing the non-updating, so I can replicate it. I’ll figure out what’s going on when I have time tonight. I don’t expect to put out a new pre-release for a few days, though. Putting out one so quickly to fix the Cancel Snipe really was rough, and burned up some goodwill with my wife and kids. :-)

Comment Topic: JBidwatcher Development / Building JBidwatcher from git.

Greetings,
Wow! That’s a great write-up, and I appreciate it a lot!

I have to note, as a bit of caution, that I don’t support the IcedTea version of Java. Historically it’s been notoriously buggy, mostly in UI code that the majority of server-side Java devs don’t care about (and thus gets fewer eyes in an open source project). I don’t know what 8 is like, but it’s been a problem for me in the past.

JBidwatcher’s source tree does come with its own version of JRuby, and all those gems are packaged with it in the lib/jbidwatcher directory. Some in gems.jar, others expanded in the file system.

The amount of work that went into you putting that together is amazing, and I can’t thank you enough!
