Greetings,

Note: There is a newer pre-release available from the 1.0.2pre6 topic.

A side effect of losing the start and end dates is that some auctions which didn’t have ‘start’ dates caused problems when saving. The problems were exacerbated by other problems up the chain, so it would cause CPU usage to skyrocket.

Many thanks to Stefan W. and Charles M. who helped me greatly in figuring out what went wrong…

Here are the latest versions, rolling up all the fixes for the issues that came up over the last week:

OS X : http://www.jbidwatcher.com/beta/JBidWatcher-1.0.2pre5.app.tar.gz

Linux : http://www.jbidwatcher.com/beta/JBidWatcher-1.0.2pre5.jar

Windows : http://www.jbidwatcher.com/beta/JBidWatcher-1.0.2pre5.exe

…and if you want to build it for yourself…

Source code : http://www.jbidwatcher.com/beta/jbidwatcher-1.0.2pre5.tar.gz

Let me know if that fixes the save issues!

Hi Morgan,
Everything looks good here now for me on WinXP. JBW is able to load all of the auctions I’m watching, and quits normally again. Thanks for the quick fixes!

This looks good! JBW quits on request and keeps the changes.

Thanks a lot for the quick fix. I really appreciate it.

Hi Morgan,

downloaded pre5, but have a small problem: I cannot add a particular ebay# to jbidwatcher. Other items go fine, but I am unable to add 200132972164. JBW says: “…. either invalid, or communication error talking to server.” Is there something peculiar to this item? Rest seems ok although I have not yet sniped. Btw: ebay’s Bid Assisant is not available here (in ebay.nl).

Cheers,

Charles

Greetings,

Fluid: Ahhh, I see that one… It’s another spot where they added random newlines into their text. :(

I’ll put a fix in for that for the full 1.0.2 release.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but I can’t get Multisniping to work (on pre4 or pre5). It comes up with the Private Auction/Multisnipe error, even though I’m sure it’s not a private auction I’m sniping on.

Single sniping seems to work fine.

pangit.

(P.S. this is on Ebay Australia BTW, if it makes any difference.)

EDIT: Ignore this, as on further checking one of the auctions I was trying to multi-snipe on WAS in fact private!! Sorry!

I, unfortunately, also came across the can’t-save/can’t-quit problem, just before 1.0.2pre5 was released. This new release does, indeed, seem to solve the problem on OSX10.3 – I could re-load the offending items (which got lost during the previous OSX force-quit), and then I could quit JBidwatcher normally.

By the way, on my machine the http link to the Source Code for these pre-releases simply gives the following message: “The files in the beta directory were not really intended for long-term and widespread distribution.” The links to the apps work normally, however.

Also, I noted an earlier post concerning Shipping costs not being loaded. I find that this occurs about one-quarter of the time for me, even when the costs are clearly indicated on the eBay item page. I haven’t noticed any obvious pattern as to which items are concerned, and the costs are easy to add manually via the context menu. Is this likely to be a problem with parsing particular eBay pages? Some example, items are: 300124590816, 280136089897. (NB. I have to change the Shipping costs from the default location to “Sweden”.)

I don’t know what this “saving” business is about – I’ve never had any problems that I know of with jbidwatcher’s ability to save things – but I was getting the Red Eye of Death, as someone so poetically called it, on all my current auctions, and the build I just downloaded from the link above (for OS X) seems to have banished that problem.

I have yet to test to see whether this latest version of jbidwatcher plays nice when I try to log out or restart my machine. The previous version always cancelled logout/restart/shutdown. ‘Twas a pain. I’m hoping that’s the “quit” issue people are referring to and I’ll find it fixed in this version. Thanks…

  • * * Edit: yep – it seems to be fixed. Yow! * * *

I’ve found a small bug in this release for Mac OS X: Control-clicking an item in the Current section immediately chooses “Snipe” from the contextual menu unless the mouse button is held down. That isn’t right…

Thanks…

tiger

Avatar David M 19 post(s)

I am not sure that this is a bug. “Snipe” is simply the first item in the contextual menu, and this is therefore highlighted by default (another item may be chosen depending on how close the menu is to the edge of the screen). Whether the highlighted item is executed immediately depends on your mouse settings. On my OSX 10.3 system, ctrl-clicking simply brings up the contextual menu and then waits for me to explicitly choose one of the menu items.

Hi Tiger & David, I’m on OSX10.4.10 and I have the same contextual menu as you David. Regards Malcolm

Er, unforunately, pre5 is now struggling with two auctions where I’m the seller. It handled a snipe nicely (I lost – outbid) but then stopped finding my two selling auctions, although they report in just fine from my browser (Firefox), suggesting the usual server problems aren’t at work here.

Thanks to all who made this possible, you guys should get some sleep.
My JBidWatcher is working just great, I really appreciate it. THANK YOU!!

Unfortunately, that log might just set the range for when an apparent collapse of some part of the Internet happened. I’m now finding that some domains are accessible (obviiously this is one of them) while others (e.g., parts of eBay, sport-touring.net, parts of NOAA’s weather site collection) are not. I assume, then, some part of a backbone or some part of DNS has failed or been attacked. Hmmm… maybe I should try to read some news?

1st Thanks for a great program, and 2nd Thanks for the fix

This is the 1st time i have logged on but thought i need to say thanks for everyones quick work in getting things moving again.

Also now reading the forums I have actually learnt to use the program more wisely so maybe even a tongue in cheek thanks to ebay lol….only joking I can only think of the amount of hours and hair pulling that went into try to fix the program so again Thanks heaps

I didn’t have the save problem with either pre4 or pre5 but I do have an ended auction that is not recognized as such (330148653865). Low priority but posted for completeness.

My configuration: Win2k, pre5.jar, Java = jre1.6.0_01

Avatar Lvanett 14 post(s)

I’m glad I checked to see if this version was available. It’s now showing the time left on BINs from stores. I’ll be testing the sniping feature again tonight. ;)

The proxy settings are no longer working correctly. This may or may not be related but it has occured at the same time as this issue because prior to the latest ebay/Jbidwatcher changes it has worked ok. I’m using 1.0.2pre5

In order to login to ebay.com.au I enable the http proxy option ( no https proxy ) and set the fields as follows
Host: http://proxy.mydomain.com.au
Port: 8080 ( yes, this is correct )
Username & Password correct for the proxy

This enables me to login to ebay but doesn’t permit me to “get my ebay items” -> fails with connection issues
However if I change the Host setting from that above to: (i.e. remove the leading “http://” )
Host: proxy.mydomain.com.au

Then I can get my ebay items (provided my ebay login was previosuly done and is still valid ). If I now attempt to “refresh the session” I get this error message
“Unable to tunnel through proxy. Proxy returns “HTTP/1.0 407 Proxy Authentication Required”

Is anyone else encountering this ?

Possibly a simple solution associated with “http://” missing from the request to login to ebay ?

Avatar plaintiger 11 post(s)

Wait – I think you’re right, David: I had the option to zoom while holding Control turned on in my trackpad settings and evidently that was the culprit. Didn’t think it was at first because I turned it off and that didn’t affect things, but then I quit and relaunched jbw, and the problem had gone. Nice. Thanks for the lead…

1.0.2pre5 on Mac OS X.4.10 : still an happy snipper !
thanks again…

Avatar RBEmerson 22 post(s)

1.0.2pre5 on SuSE Linux tracked an item withdrawn (auction ended early by seller – item is defective) without a hitch and also tracked two ended auctions where I was the seller. The dump listed earlier, it turns out, was driven by DNS problems somewhere in Comcast (OpenDNS used as a workaround). Bottom line: pre5 – two thumbs up!!

Avatar apikoros 4 post(s)

Thank you! I won an auction last night with 1.0.2pre5, on a 1st-generation Intel iMac running OS 10.4.9.

Avatar David M 19 post(s)

The current version of JBidwatcher seems to have problems parsing pages in which a BIN item has been won with a Best Offer, instead.

As an example, Item 180087104618 was won (by me) with a Best Offer of US$6.00, as displayed in the relevant part of the eBay page. However, when this item was first won (ie. when the item was moved from the “current” to the “complete” tab), my copy of JBidwatcher displayed the Current price as:
unk1.49
After an update of the item, JBidwatcher now displays:
null (FP)
rather than the winning price.

Has anyone else come across this issue?

David

Avatar RBEmerson 22 post(s)

I haven’t seen that happen but I watched a BIN move to Complete when someone used BIN on the item. In general, at least here, pre5 is looking pretty good.

NB: “Source code : http://www.jbidwatcher.com/beta/JBidWatcher-1.0.2pre5.tar.gz” does not work since the “beta” directory in which it lives has a redirect notice to SourceForge. SourceForge does not have the pre-release versions. CVS still works – it’s just that it’s easier to explode a tarball over a Subversion working copy than it is with a CVS checkout :)
